“Abacha Never Looted Nigeria” – Mariam Abacha Accuses Nigerians Of Being Forgetful

Wife of the former head of state of Nigeria, Mariam Abacha, in a recent interview has defended her late husband, General Sani Abacha,

against claims that he looted Nigeria while he was head of state

She denied popular claims that the former military leader embezzled billions of dollars from Nigeria’s treasury

while in power, which he held from November 1993 until his death in 2008.

Gen. Abacha served in three military administrations in succession.

He declared on December 31, 1983, that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari would be installed as the head of state on January 1, 1984,

following the coup that overthrew the second republic.

Mariam Abacha Dismisses Claims Her Late Husband Looted Nigeria

Gen. Abacha was disassociated by Mariam from the contentious annulment of the June 12, 1983, presidential election results.

She claims that the money that was claimed to have been stolen from him was purposefully misrepresented

and then vanished under suspicious circumstances following his death on June 8, 1998.

The Federal Government has retrieved millions of dollars’ worth of loot from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Switzerland, among other nations.

As of 2023, more than $3.8 billion had been repatriated from foreign jurisdictions to the Federal Government as funds illegally siphoned from the public till.

Mrs. Abacha spoke yesterday during an interview on Television Continental (TVC) in commemoration of the 27th anniversary of Abacha’s death.

Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed away?” she asked.

Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad? And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that.
