Senator Natasha Uduaghan Granted #50million Bail, Court Strikes Out Request To Imprison Her!

Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the suspended senator for Kogi Central, has been granted N50 million bail by Justice Chizoba Orji

of the Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) High Court.

The presiding judge ruled today, June 19, that there was no reason to deny the defendant bail

because there was enough proof that she was willing to stand trial.

Accordingly, the court ruled that the defendant must provide one surety who must possess a landed property in Abuja and be an honest individual.

The court further based its decision on section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended,

as well as section 163 and 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

The case was subsequently adjourned till September 23 for trial.

The court also rejected an application for the lawmaker to be remanded in prison custody pending the determination of the case against her.

Meanwhile, recall that the Federal government is prosecuting the lawmaker for allegedly making a false claim
that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and a former Governor of Kogi state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, were behind a plot to assassinate her.

In the three-count charge designated CR/297/25, the Federal Government claimed that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, the only defendant,

made the false and defamatory statements during her live television appearance as a guest.

It specifically charged the lawmaker with “imputation, knowing or having reason to believe that such imputation will harm the reputation of a person.”

The lawmaker is currently suspended for six months.

The charge states that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan violated Penal Code 391, Cap 89, Laws of the Federation, 1990,

by making a false accusation that damaged the reputation of others.
